A Letter From Our Publisher
People overwhelmingly agree that local journalism is essential to a functioning democracy. It provides the shared facts communities rely on, and that’s a responsibility we take seriously at the Chattanooga Times Free Press. In fact, several years ago we began publishing our core journalistic values daily so that readers know exactly what guides our work — and so they can hold us accountable. These values include objectivity, impartiality, integrity, the pursuit of truth and a clear separation of news and opinion.
In a media environment shaped by social media platforms, algorithms and misinformation, our newsroom works hard to provide readers with news and information they can rely on. We’re not just a business — we’re a part of the civic infrastructure. That’s why we’re inviting the community to partner with us as we expand and deepen our coverage of the issues that matter most in Chattanooga. Donations will allow us to do more reporting in critical areas and ensure important stories reach the public. All stories funded through this effort will be available to everyone, regardless of subscription status, so that community-focused journalism reaches as many people as possible.
We believe the best way to keep local news alive is to build on what already exists. We already have the newsroom, the infrastructure, and most importantly, the trust of this community. Supporting your local newspaper isn’t a partisan act. It isn’t about liking every headline or agreeing with everything on the opinion pages. It’s about protecting a shared community asset so that people are informed and involved. If you believe that truth, accountability and facts still matter in the place you call home, we invite you to join our mission to strengthen local journalism in Chattanooga.
Thank you,
Eliza Gaines
